"The Deep Divide" is the first collaboration between Irish songwriter Richard Murray and American songwriter Natalie Haskins. Written and recorded entirely in the North of Ireland, the record brings together five original songs rooted in Americana, Irish folk, and the strange places where history, folklore, and real life collide.

There are stories here about historical figures, a famous shootout, an unsolved murder, and, in between it all, a couple of love songs.

“The New Demesne” takes Alan Lomax, the legendary American folklorist, as its focal point. “Mono Jim” tells the true story of a Native American tracker who helped pursue convicts through the California hills, ending in the shootout at what is now Convict Lake near Bishop, California. “Inga Maria” follows the still-unsolved story of a German tourist whose body was discovered in the Ballypatrick Forest near Ballycastle, Ireland.

Then there are “If I Had A Dime” and “Morning Song,” songs about the early days of falling for someone—the hope, uncertainty, excitement, and fear that come with letting somebody in.

"The Deep Divide" is a record built from two writers, two places, and a shared love of songs that have a story to tell. Americana and Irish folk meet somewhere in between, filtered through the lives and perspectives of the people who made it.

I have been working on a song about my beloved Grandmother, who passed away in 2022. I started working on the song after hearing the story of her wedding day as she lay in bed at the hospital, battling cancer. She was an incredible woman and a tremendous loss to my family. Her legacy is one that to this day stays with me. This song is about all those things.

I started recording 'Sweet Lorrita' in April of 2025, after battling with the lyrics since 2022. The track was recorded at Sonic Milk Studios in Cambria, Ca, and finally finished in Laurel Lane Studios in San Luis Obispo. I was in town visiting from Ireland. I was lucky enough to get my incredibly talented brother Warren Haskins to come to the studio to contribute guitar, backup vocals, piano, and shakers to the track, transforming what was a simple acoustic track, to a much more powerful and layered emotional listening experience. My 13-year-old niece Ella, was visiting the studio, and she sang as well. She contributed some beautiful backup harmonies, a true family affair. The result is a beautiful acoustic song that I am so proud to release.
